Find council grants and the right funding pathway

A search for council grants can lead you in two directions: government funding available to councils, or grants a council offers to local community organisations. Identify who will apply before spending time on a funding round.

For a council-led park upgrade, start with the responsible project team and the council's adopted plans. For a community-led project, confirm the applicant's legal structure, the land manager and the permissions needed to carry out the work. A site name or postcode alone cannot confirm eligibility.

Check the grant provider's current guidelines for the applicant, project location, eligible expenditure, contributions and delivery dates. Keep the official link and the date you checked it with your project notes. Brisbane City Council's community grants page is one example of council funding aimed at local not-for-profit groups; it is a different pathway from a council applying for a federal capital works grant.

Plan the whole public space

A playground may be the centre of your project, but the finished place also depends on access, seating, shade and the surrounding works. Put those needs into the initial brief so they have space in the budget.

Keep drainage, paths, landscaping, demolition and other required works visible. Allocate responsibility for design, approvals and specialist inputs before setting the final scope.

Understand whole-project costs

When you are assessing council grants, these are project-planning categories, not a list of automatically eligible costs. Check fixed infrastructure, movable equipment, design work and operating expenses against the rules of the particular grant.

Check council and community infrastructure grant programmes

Council grants and funding opportunities change throughout the year. The examples below show why a single open-or-closed message is not enough. They are a starting point for planning, rather than a complete Australian grants directory.

Together, the two new rounds sit within the Australian Government’s $750 million commitment over three years. The announced funding range is $250,000 to $15 million per project. The Forecast Funding Opportunity is planning information, subject to change, and applications cannot be submitted at this time.

Anzac Park: from funding to a finished playspace

This completed Glen Innes Nature Play Park project includes the playground and supporting works. The $1.2 million below is the full project total, not a Moduplay contract value.

The project started with local parents advocating for an upgraded playground in 2022. Council consultation helped shape the design, including ramped access to elevated play and activities for different ages and abilities.

Get your project brief ready

You can make progress on the brief while council grants are being investigated. Use the whole-of-project cost guide to keep early budget allowances visible. Record what is known, mark the gaps and give each outstanding item an owner.

1. Confirm the site and applicant

   Record the site address, boundaries, land manager, proposed legal applicant and permission requirements.

2. Define the community need

   Explain who uses the space, what needs to improve and which consultation, asset plan or strategy supports the project.

3. Set the scope

   Separate essential works, options, retained equipment and exclusions. Include access and supporting park infrastructure.

4. Build a whole-of-project budget

   List equipment, freight, installation, playground surfacing, site works and documentation. Record tax treatment, contingency and the date of each allowance.

5. Check contributions and timing

   Separate confirmed funds from proposed contributions. Check co-funding, expenditure dates, procurement and completion requirements against the guidelines.

6. Prepare a useful handover

   Gather plans, photographs, approximate dimensions and cost inputs. Identify the internal owner and the next decision your team needs to make.

An indicative budget needs a defined scope behind it. If the available funding does not cover the whole project, assess whether a staged approach is practical and permitted. Plan later stages early so access, paths and site works can support them.
