Railway Park
At Colo Vale Railway Park, the brief was to create something new, cutting-edge and built for everyday use, while still paying tribute to the town’s railway story. Working with Wingecarribee Shire Council, we shaped a play space that feels modern without losing its local character, giving families a spot that connects past and present in a simple, practical way.

Design Brief
The new playground sits alongside the original rail line that once connected Cole Vale to the wider region. Council wanted something that nodded to the town’s heritage without turning the site into a theme park. The focus was movement, community use, and practical features that suit everyday family visits.
Everything in the layout supports this. Clear sightlines, low platforms, all-ages access points, and equipment choices that offer climbing, balancing, and coordination challenges. The aim was to give kids a safe circuit to explore without overwhelming the small footprint.
Concept and features
Every part of the design responds to how people naturally move through the space.
- Railway styling on the climbers, handrails, and tower gives the site identity and links back to local history.
- Low platforms and sensible step points keep the unit safe and comfortable for younger users.
- Open visibility supports parents and carers, making the area simple to supervise.
- A mix of climbing, sliding, balancing, and swinging options creates steady activity and reduces wear on any single element.
- Ground surfacing and layout support easy access for all ages.
Benefits and impact
Railway Park gives local families a reliable space for daily play. The equipment is durable, easy to maintain, and built to handle constant community use. For a small township like Cole Vale, this project delivers long-term value, a safer gathering point, and a play area that sits neatly within the town’s character.
