Koo Wee Rup Primary School
Koo Wee Rup Primary School’s brand new recreation space was designed to give every student a genuine way to join in. Completed in May 2025, the project combines an inclusive playground, challenging climbing equipment and a learn-to-ride circuit, creating opportunities for children of different ages, abilities and play preferences to have fun together.

Designing for the Whole School
The goal was to create a space that would continue to engage students as they moved through different year levels. This meant looking beyond one traditional playground unit and providing varied experiences for children who enjoy climbing, riding, imaginative play, sport or spending time with friends.
The final design offers a clear choice of activities while keeping the whole area connected. Paths and equipment placement create natural movement between the main playground, monkey bars, GeoClimber and surrounding circuit.
Learn-to-Ride Circuit
A learn-to-ride circuit wraps around the playground, giving students a dedicated space to build confidence on bikes and scooters.
Traffic-style signs, road markings and play features introduce children to basic road awareness in an active and approachable way. A pretend bike repair shop adds another layer of imaginative play, allowing students to stop, “repair” their bikes and continue around the circuit.
By positioning the circuit around the playground, riding becomes part of the wider play experience rather than a separate activity.
An Inclusive and Varied Playground
The configured Connect playground includes ramp access and low-level activities, giving more children meaningful ways to enter, explore and participate. Climbing features, elevated play and slides provide additional progression for students seeking greater physical challenge.
Connect was selected for its robust, modular construction and suitability for a busy school environment. Its flexible design allowed the unit to be configured around the school’s needs while supporting a practical, lower-maintenance outcome over the life of the playground.
The Geo² Bajimba creates a strong challenge for older and more confident students. Its interconnected climbing routes support balance, strength, coordination and social play, giving children multiple ways to move across and through the structure.
Hexagonal shapes scattered through the colourful softfall help visually connect the different areas and bring another playful detail to the overall design.
Working Through Site Constraints
Delivering the project required careful consideration of the existing site. The design had to maintain access to a fire-hose outlet while also addressing drainage issues across the area. These requirements were incorporated from the beginning, allowing the play space to work around essential infrastructure while providing a practical long-term outcome for the school.
A Holistic Approach To Site
The playground was planned as part of the school’s broader recreation area, with an existing multisport court positioned directly behind it. Considering both spaces together helped create a balanced activity zone where sport, riding, climbing, imaginative play and social interaction can all happen alongside one another.
This broader approach means children are less likely to be left without an activity that appeals to them. Whether a student wants to join a ball game, tackle the GeoClimber, ride around the circuit or access the playground via the ramp, there is a genuine option available.
