James Cook Park
James Cook Park’s renewed playground brings a playful, accessible design to a welcoming family space. The renewal was for Shellharbour City Council, with Simpson Landscapes completing the installation, and formed part of a wider programme that also included Sparta Park in Warilla.

At the heart of the playspace is a configured Connect multi-play unit, bringing together height, climbing challenges, puzzle panels and different ways to move through its levels. Freestanding equipment adds even more ways to play:
- A two-bay swing set with options for different abilities and play preferences
- A Connect 3 Panel
- An Animal Shuffle Panel
- The inclusive Zulu Rocker
A parrot perches above the unit, while the koala panel and native green colour palette add an Australian connection to the overall design.
Large native trees sit close to part of the playground, with substantial root systems below ground. The layout needed to work around the trees while maintaining clear sightlines for parents. The sloped site, including a flat section, also made drainage a key consideration.
Play Matta was selected for its accessible, slip-resistant surface. Its free-draining design suited the flat section, where water pooling was a consideration. The modular tiles can also be replaced individually if needed.
The NSW Government’s Everyone Can Play principles consider whether people can get to, play at and stay in a playspace.
Can I get there? A quiet street and available parking make the playground easier to reach. Play Matta provides an accessible surface for moving around the playspace, including for wheelchair users.
Can I play? The surfacing and equipment offer different ways to take part, from climbing and puzzle play to swinging and moving through the Connect unit. Together, they provide a range of play experiences for children with different abilities and preferences.
Can I stay? Toilets, a water bubbler and seats support longer visits, while the surrounding trees provide natural shade.
