Designing Playgrounds Beyond the Big Unit
Not every playground needs to be a tower or rope structure. Some of the most valuable spaces focus on movement, learning, and confidence-building instead.

Purpose-Built for Active Play
Active play spaces are designed to get kids moving, thinking, and interacting in new ways. Encouraging children to explore how their bodies move through space, rather than how high they can climb.
The design of Appin Park in Wollondilly shows what this can look like in action. A Learn to Ride track helps younger riders build coordination and real-world awareness, while a Ninja Course keeps older kids engaged with energy-burning, skill-based challenges.
Together these features create a space that’s active, inclusive and family-friendly. Proof that playgrounds don’t need a “big unit” to deliver big value.
Inclusive by Design
It’s almost impossible to create one space that’s everything to everyone, and that’s okay. By designing for different types of play, communities gain spaces that are inclusive by nature rather than by size or product.
Younger riders build confidence, older kids find challenge and parents and carers feel welcome to join in.
When everyone can take part in their own way, the space truly belongs to the community.
Why Consultation Matters
Getting it right starts with listening, community consultation helps uncover what’s already there, as well as what’s missing.
Sometimes, a site might already have a school nearby, a sports field, or an open reserve. In those cases, the goal isn’t to duplicate what exists, but to design something that adds to it. A place that builds on those strengths and fills the gaps between them.
That’s how councils and designers create spaces that complement, not compete with, existing playgrounds. It should be about broadening the network of play, not repeating it!
Sustainability and Quality
Designing smarter also means building sustainably. RePlay™ recycled panels, locally made components, and long-lasting materials all help reduce impact while keeping play front and center.
Sustainability shouldn’t be an add-on, it should be part of the plan.
The Right Space for the Right Need
There’s no single formula for play. The best outcomes happen when every park serves a different purpose, together forming a network of movement, learning, and imagination across a community.
That’s what it means to design playgrounds beyond the big unit.
