St James Park
The amazing Tree Cubby at St James Park, Glebe winds its way around an old Celtis Australis tree… encircling the child user with tree branches until they are high up off the ground…
Great care was taken planning and executing the project so the integrity of the tree root system would be preserved to ensure it would be there for generations to come.
There’s more to the construction of this custom tree house playground than meets the eye. Our expert Project Build Team co-ordinated and hand built this playground on site. See the process below…
The concept provided by Aspect Studios, Sydney.
A bland site with 2 old trees and not much else! Surveying the area for construction planning.
First we had to map out the play structure and ensure no major roots would be impacted by the design.
The shape of the platforms was laid out using a template that avoided any root damage. We then used the template to finalise the design of the platforms.
A mock up of the structure helped us to determine where the platforms and safety panels would be positioned in relation to the tree branches.
Installation of the posts into foundation holes that were excavated by water jet to avoid root damage.
No fines concrete substrates for the rubber pathways so rainwater runoff can still get to the tree roots.
Custom seating by others is constructed alongside the play structure.
Messages and carvings feature throughout the playground.
The finished play house sits neatly around the tree and complements the natural surroundings beautifully!
