A beautiful place to visit has been made more beautiful...

When Wollongong City Council announced it was to upgrade the Boat Harbour there was much concern with the local residents that it would spoil the beauty of the area.

The result has been quite the opposite with the improvements getting the thumbs up from anybody that has the opportunity to visit the area.

Wollongong Historic Lighthouse is a feature of the Wollongong Boat Harbour and reminds us of an earlier era when the Boat Harbour was anything but a playground.

The harbour was hand excavated by convicts in the early 1800's and then deepened to 18 feet in 1868.

It was used mainly then for the transport of coal from the region to Sydney by boat before adequate roads were built.

The early history of the harbour has been woven into the new playground design with a rail car Multi Rocker on "tracks" in the wetpour rubber soft-fall, a Train Buffer at the end of the tracks and a large Crane Gantry style slide platform that is reminiscent of the mining era so entwined with the region.

Wollongong City Council has transformed the Wollongong Boat Harbour beachfront into a destination for families.

The Wollongong Blue Mile Project is a "big picture" project that is transforming Wollongong's waterfront into a beautiful place to visit.

Part of the project involves the rejuvenation of the children's playground on the foreshores of the Wollongong Boat Harbour. Council engaged the design services of a Landscape Architect and Moduplay assisted in the design of the new playground layout which had to reflect the heritage and historic values of the area.

This included references back to the early days of the Harbour when it was a working harbour for the export of locally mined coal to the Sydney market by steamship.
